Dale Exiles are back at the Crown Oil Arena for Saturday’s vital match against Barrow. Thirty Exiles will be enjoying a finger buffet pre-match and probably biting their nails during it. Exiles have always enjoyed a good relationship with the club in planning these reunions and new man Adrian Hunt, Dale’s Head of Commercial has been the main point of contact this year. The club recognises the importance that Exiles play in promoting Rochdale AFC throughout the UK and across the globe. They know that it’s not always easy to get back to the Spotland area, so laying on a special day makes it an attractive proposition. Staff at the club make a real effort and provide a stadium tour, Coaching staff, club directors and players not in the match day squad mingle with Exiles before the game. There will also be a raffle for a signed centenary shirt, provided by the club. Proceeds will be going to a well known legal challenge fund!
Today’s party comprises Exiles from all over England, Scotland, Wales and Mark Wagstaff deserves applause as he has flown in from Rwanda. The Trust is sponsoring the game and the Exiles will choose the Man of the Match; they hope to have plenty of nominees to choose from. I know Freya Hollows, a young southern-based female fan can’t wait to meet Robbie Stockdale. Freya and another young superfan, Freddie Brockerton-Baker, will make the Man of the Match presentation.
This year sees a new initiative for Exiles Day with Willie Burns joining as a guest. Willie, nephew of Man United’s Francis Burns, was a cultured player in the Dale defence from 1989-91 playing 70 games He has fond memories of playing at Spotland and counts the run to the FA Cup 5th round with Dale, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace the eventual finalists, as one of his career highlights. Martin Culshaw will do a Q&A with Willie in the 1907 lounge before the match so those enjoying separate match day hospitality can listen in.
The Trust this season has seen record memberships across all categories and 388 are Exiles. The strong Exile presence is a testament to the affection supporters feel towards the club, no matter where they currently reside. And finally is it tempting fate to remind everyone that Exiles have never having seen Dale lose a home Exiles match? Let’s hope not!
