Last weekend as the Dale beat Bury again in a fiercely contested local derby, Dale Trust was supporting the Play Fair Qatar campaign.
This campaign is aimed at forcing FIFA to reconsider their decision to give Qatar the World Cup in 2022.
The reasons for this are many but here are a few of the most important.
Already there have been 1200 deaths of construction workers from Nepal, India and Bangladesh alone. That is almost 40 a month since construction began on new stadiums. And it is estimated that 7000 will die by 20022 if nothing is done to stop it.
And workers there are not able to join trade unions to force compliance with basic health and safety standards.
On top of that Qatari laws give their employers enormous power. Workers are not able to leave the country without their employers express permission and 90% of migrant workers report having their passports confiscated to stop them leaving.
Qatar is one of the richest nations in the world but wages are staggeringly low. Many construction workers report being paid only £6 a day, with many having their wages withheld for months.
For these compelling reasons it is not acceptable that FIFA conspire with this modern day slavery and the campaign calls for Qatar to be stripped of the World Cup is they do not act to stop this appalling state of affairs.
Dale Trust is proud to support this campaign for civilised working and human rights in Qatar.
